Why Should You Recycle Your Ink & Toner Cartridges?

You should recycle your ink and toner cartridges if you care for any one of the following benefits:

Save money:
Recycled and remanufactured cartridges are considerably less expensive (30-60%) than buying new ones. The annual savings on your printing costs can be substantial based on the average cost per page. The greater the cartridge usage, the more the dollar amount in savings will grow.

Virgin production requires consumption of more raw materials, resources and energy than remanufactured cartridges. It is amazing how much time, money and resources we save by recycling.

Reduce Solid Waste:
Recycling and remanufacturing of cartridges prevents them from ending up on our already overloaded landfills thus reducing the potential damage and risk to our soil and groundwater quality at landfill. This will make more sense once you consider the following facts:

Every printer cartridge on average is made up of about 2 1/2 pounds of plastic, along with rubber, aluminum, and steel, small percentage of foam, rubber paper and ink/toner.
Every year hundred millions of printer cartridges end up dumped in landfills. In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and that number increases by 12 % annually.
Every printer cartridge that is thrown away adds more than 3½ pounds of plastic and solid waste to our already overloaded landfills.
The plastic discarded from a cartridge is industrial grade and takes more than 1000 years to decompose.
The toxic waste from a cartridge finds its way into our watertable.
For every cartridge we recycle and remanufacture, it means one less empty cartridge going to the landfill.

Save Natural Resources:

About 3 1/2 quarts of petroleum are required to power the manufacturing process that converts oil and natural gas to plastic, to produce a single printer cartridge.
Every printer cartridge contains petroleum as "embedded energy". It takes the energy equivalent of about 1/2 gallon of oil to produce a 2 1/2 pound laser cartridge.
2 1/2 ounces of oil are used to produce each new inkjet cartridge.
3 1/2 quarts of oil are used to produce each new toner cartridge.
Half a gallon of oil is conserved for each laser cartridge that is returned for remanufacturing.
Oil is a non-renewable fossil fuel. It is a very valuable natural resource that we cannot afford to waste.
A larger portion of the world’s dwindling supply of fossil fuels currently used to manufacture new cartridges could be put to better use to heat homes or manufacture other products that benefit the Canadian/ American society and also communities around the world.
Conserving oil by remanufacturing cartridges also means putting less demand on oil resources and possible lowered oil prices to consumers.

Save Energy:

Reusing cartridges saves energy used to produce power. It uses significantly less energy to remanufacture a cartridge than to produce a new one.
Remanufacturing industries (of all types of products) save as much energy each year as is produced by five nuclear plants.

Save the Environment, Save Money with Recycled and Remanufactured Cartridges. Remanufacturing is the superior choice, both environmentally and economically.
